Important changes for people applying for Swedish citizenship
New measures are being introduced to improve security in Swedish citizenship cases. The new measures also affect people who have already applied and are waiting for a decision.
You want to apply Am I a Swedish citizen?
If you are not sure if you are a Swedish citizen, you can apply for a declaration of citizenship.
If you do not know whether you have previously gained or lost Swedish citizenship, you can apply for a declaration of citizenship. For example, you can do this if you are unsure about any of the following:
- Did I become a Swedish citizen at birth?
- I was born abroad and have never lived in Sweden – have I lost my citizenship?
- I have acquired citizenship in another country – have I therefore lost my Swedish citizenship?
The declaration of citizenship will state whether or not you are a Swedish citizen.
Some people acquire automatic citizenship at birth
Children born in Sweden or abroad to at least one Swedish parent can automatically become Swedish citizens. Read more about which children receive automatic citizenship:

Prepare this before you apply
You must attach copies of the following documents. The copies must be certified.
Identity document showing who you are
Birth certificate, if you were born out of wedlock
Your parents’ marriage certificate
Apply for a declaration of citizenship
Fill in the form:
Submit or send in the application
If you are live outside Sweden, you must submit your application at a Swedish embassy or consulate-general.
If you live in Sweden, you must instead send your application to:

Medborgarskapsenheten

It costs nothing to apply for a declaration of citizenship.
After the decision
The Swedish Migration Agency sends the declaration of citizenship to you, or to your preferred Swedish embassy or consulate-general, if you live abroad.

The Swedish Migration Agency's new website has now been launched
On 5 March, the Swedish Migration Agency launched a completely new version of migrationsverket.se, with a new structure and a more user-friendly navigation. The purpose of the new website is primarily to make it easier for visitors to find the information they need.
