Important changes for people applying for Swedish citizenship
New measures are being introduced to improve security in Swedish citizenship cases. The new measures also affect people who have already applied and are waiting for a decision.
If you have lost or been released from your Swedish citizenship, under certain conditions, you can get it back through a notification.
If you have lost your Swedish citizenship pursuant to the law, or were released from your Swedish citizenship after application, you can file a notification to regain it. The rules vary depending on the when and how you lost your Swedish citizenship and the country of which you are currently a citizen.

Fee for a notification to regain Swedish citizenship: SEK 475
If you are not applying or notifying online, you pay the fee to bankgiro number 5223-6999. The IBAN for the account is SE59 1200 0000 0128 1010 6894 and the BIC/SWIFT code is DABASESX (Danske Bank). In the box for messages to the recipient, you write the name and surname of the person the fee is for, as well as their personal identity number. If you are paying the fees of several people at the same time, write the personal identity number for each of them. If you are including children under 18 years of age in your application, you do not need to pay any fees on their behalf. Write on the application or notification form when and how you paid the fee.
When you send in the application or notification, enclose the receipt of the application fee.
The Swedish Migration Agency will send you the decision. If you have become a Swedish citizen and want to apply for a Swedish passport, you should contact the police.

If you are a citizen of a non-Nordic country and have lost your Swedish citizenship, you can get it back if you meet the following requirements:
You must have reached the age of 18
You must have one of the following:
You must have lived in Sweden for a total of ten years
You must have been living in Sweden and have been listed in the Swedish Population Register for two years
You must have proven it probable that your stated identity is correct
You must not be reasonably suspected or convicted of certain crimes
You must not be reasonably suspected or convicted of a crime for which the punishment under Swedish law is four or more years in prison. You also must not be convicted of repeated crimes. The exception to this requirement is if the repeated crimes were of a less serious nature according to Swedish law, or if they were committed a long time ago. This applies regardless of whether the suspected or committed crimes took place in Sweden or another country.
You must not pose a threat to Sweden’s national security or public safety
You must not be affiliated with certain groups or organisations
You must not be affiliated or have been affiliated with groups or organisations that have extensively abused other people.

Before 1 July 2001, it was not allowed for Swedish citizens to acquire additional citizenship while retaining their Swedish one. The Swedish Migration Agency's new website has now been launched
On 5 March, the Swedish Migration Agency launched a completely new version of migrationsverket.se, with a new structure and a more user-friendly navigation. The purpose of the new website is primarily to make it easier for visitors to find the information they need.
