How it works

You apply

You fill in the application and attach the required documents. In most cases, you submit your application via an external service provider (VFS Global), in other cases you do so at an embassy or consulate-general. You may need to book an appointment for your visit.

Find out where to submit your application:

You hand in your passport. It will be sent to the embassy or consulate-general that will be handling your case.

The Swedish Migration Agency reviews your application

Your application is processed at the embassy or consulate-general, or sometimes by the Swedish Migration Agency.

We will contact you if we need more information.

Waiting time while we process your application

Now you must wait. A decision is normally made within 15 days of the date on which the embassy received your application.

You receive our decision

It is the embassy, consulate-general or the Swedish Migration Agency that makes the decision in your case. The external service provider or embassy will then notify you of the decision and return your passport.

If you have applied for an extension, it is the Swedish Migration Agency that makes a decision in your case and sends the decision to you.

If your application has been approved, you will receive an entry visa sticker in your passport. The entry visa sticker states when and for how long the Schengen visa is valid and how many days you can stay in the Schengen area.

When you receive the decision, you can find out the reasons on which we based it.
