You apply
If you wish to extend your residence permit, fill in the application and attach the necessary documents. Submit your application before your current residence permit expires, but no more than two months before that deadline.

Waiting time before we start examining the application
Now follows a period of waiting until the Swedish Migration Agency takes a closer look at your application.

The Swedish Migration Agency reviews your application
The Swedish Migration Agency reviews your application. If we can immediately see that you do not meet the requirements for an extended residence permit, we may already make a decision to reject your application.
We will contact you if we need more information.

You may need to present your passport
Before we make a decision about your residence permit, in some cases you may need to present your passport. For example, you will need to do this if you have been issued a new passport since you first applied.
If you need to present your passport, we will contact you and ask you to book an appointment at one of our service centres. You can also provide fingerprints and be photographed for your residence permit card at the same appointment, because it will need to be renewed if you are granted an extended residence permit.

The Swedish Migration Agency processes the application
The Swedish Migration Agency processes the application. Now we will review all the information about your application and determine whether you can be granted a residence permit.
We will contact you if we need more information.

You need to be photographed and fingerprinted
In order to get a new residence permit card, you need to be photographed and fingerprinted. If you have not done this earlier during the processing, you must book an appointment to do so at the Migration Agency's service centre. If your family is applying with you, they should also book an appointment.

You receive our decision
If you applied in the e-service, you will receive an email as soon as we have made a decision. The email will tell you whether you have been granted a residence permit or if your application has been rejected. The decision will then be sent by post to you or your representative. If you applied using a paper form, you will not receive an email from us. Instead, you or your representative will receive the decision by post.
When you receive the decision, you can find out the reasons on which we based our decision. If you are granted a residence permit, you have the right to live and work in Sweden as long as the permit is valid. If your application is rejected, you must prepare to leave Sweden.
