New EU-wide border control system

On 12 October, the new Entry Exit System will be introduced at EU border controls.

The new Entry Exit System is an EU-wide system for the electronic registration of third-country nationals travelling to the Schengen area for short stays, i.e. up to 90 days in a 180-day period. If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU, you must register when entering or leaving the Schengen area for short stays. At the border control, you must show your travel documents and passport, have your fingerprints taken and be photographed.

The Entry Exit System will replace stamps in passports and will improve and streamline entry and exit controls at the EU's external borders. It also aims to combat the misuse of identities and travel documents and to identify persons who do not fulfil the conditions for entry or residence in the territory of the Member States.

The Entry Exit System is being gradually introduced in the 29 European countries from 12 October and will be operational at all border crossings in April 2026.
