Long-term residents are granted a five-year residence permit

Following legislative changes on 12 July, those who are granted long-term resident status in Sweden will no longer be issued with a permanent residence permit. Instead, you will be issued with a five-year residence permit.

If you are granted this status before 12 July, you will receive an EC/EU residence permit card and a card showing that you hold a permanent residence permit. If you are granted this status after 12 July you will receive an EC/EU residence permit card and a residence permit card valid for five years.

At present, a permanent residence permit is required to become a Swedish citizen. However, the Swedish Parliament has decided that, from 12 July, this requirement will not apply to those who have long-term resident status in Sweden and who have well-founded prospects of being granted continued long-term resident status, or who have been a resident in Sweden for at least ten years.
