LMA cards not valid from 1 October
All LMA cards for asylum seekers must be replaced by application cards at the latest by 1 October 2026. If you have an LMA card, this means that you need to exchange it for an application card.
If you have an LMA card, you must exchange it for an application card before 1 October. After 1 October, LMA cards are no longer valid.
You will receive a letter from the Swedish Migration Agency
During the summer, those who have an LMA card will receive a letter from the Swedish Migration Agency with information about how to replace the card.
You will need to visit the Swedish Migration Agency to be photographed and fingerprinted. You need to do this even if you have previously done so when you received your LMA card. The letter will inform you of when to do this.
When the new card is ready
When your application card is ordered, you will receive a letter stating when and where you can collect your new card.
About the application card
The reason for the replacement is that the EU’s migration and asylum pact requires all EU Member States to have common rules within several areas. One of the requirements is that people who have applied for international protection (asylum) must receive an application card.
The application card proves that you have applied for international protection (asylum) and are legally in Sweden. The card has a QR code and the Swedish Migration Agency updates the card’s status digitally in the same way as with an LMA card.
