Stricter rules when the Temporary Protection Directive is extended
The EU has decided to extend the Temporary Protection Directive until 4 March 2028. In connection with the extension, restrictions are being introduced for people who have military obligations in Ukraine.
The decision to extend the Temporary Protection Directive came into force on 5 August. If you received a decision on a residence permit before 5 August 2026, your permit is valid until 4 March 2027, and you will have the opportunity to apply for an extension of your residence permit at the beginning of 2027.
New requirements for people with military obligations
Since 5 August 2026, anyone applying for temporary protection for the first time must have fulfilled their military obligations in Ukraine. If you are a man aged 23 to 65, you must show that you have fulfilled your military obligations or that you are exempt from the compulsory military service requirement in Ukraine.
You can show that you meet the requirement, for example, by providing a passport with a valid exit stamp (the stamp must not be more than 90 days old), a certificate from the Reserv+ app (known as an e-VOD), or other official documents showing that you are entitled to leave Ukraine.
You will soon be able to upload digital copies of your documents in the e-service to apply for temporary protection for the first time.

The new requirements concerning military obligations only apply if you are applying for protection for the first time on or after 5 August.
