On 1 October 2026, the rules for immigration due to family ties will change. If you are a student with family members moving with you or living with you in Sweden, certain requirements will change.
Requirement for comprehensive health insurance
If your family member is going to stay in Sweden for a maximum of one year, comprehensive health insurance will be required. The insurance must, for example, cover medical treatment and hospital care in Sweden.
Legal guardians of children
In order for a residence permit to be granted to a child who is not your child together with your family member, there will be a requirement that the parent of the child is also the legal guardian of the child.
No change to the maintenance requirement
For family members of students, there is no change to the maintenance requirement. This means you must still prove that you have sufficient funds to support your family members for the permit period. This requirement applies to both first-time applications and applications for an extension.
