The Swedish language test for citizenship may be postponed
The new Swedish language test may be introduced later than planned. The requirement to have knowledge of Swedish will remain, but for the time being, you can show your knowledge in other ways.
In a report, the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) recommends postponing the new Swedish language test for citizenship. This does not mean that the requirement to have knowledge of Swedish will be removed. If the requirement applies to you, you will still need to show that you have sufficient knowledge of Swedish.
The Government will consider the recommendation and decide when the new Swedish language test for citizenship can be introduced.
How you can show your knowledge of Swedish
You can show your knowledge of Swedish in several different ways, for example through:
- a passing grade in Swedish or Swedish as a second language in Year 9 of compulsory school or adapted compulsory school, or in Years 9–10 of special school
- a passing grade in Swedish or Swedish as a second language at upper secondary school, adapted upper secondary school or folk high school
- a passing grade in Swedish or Swedish as a second language in municipal adult education
- a passing grade in the highest course in Swedish for Immigrants (SFI)
- a passing grade in Swedish at compulsory school or upper secondary school in another Nordic country
- a result from Tisus, a Swedish language proficiency test that assesses the Swedish language skills required for higher education in Sweden.
You can also show your knowledge of Swedish using the results of another Swedish language proficiency test that demonstrates with a high degree of certainty that you have a functional level of Swedish.
The test on Swedish society will continue
This does not affect the test on Swedish society. The test will continue to be held.
Ongoing applications for Swedish citizenship
The Swedish Migration Agency will continue to process applications for Swedish citizenship under the current rules. If we need more information or documents for your case, we will contact you.
