Before the Swedish Migration Agency can make a decision, you must present your passport. Most applicants will receive an email about doing so through a digital passport check via an app. If you are unable, or do not want to do a digital passport check, you must decline via the link in the email. We will inform you if you must present your passport in person.

You need to book an appointment to visit an embassy or consulate-general if any of the following applies to you:

  • The Swedish Migration Agency has informed you that you need to present your passport in person.
  • You have been summoned to an interview.
  • You need a visa to enter Sweden and must provide fingerprints and be photographed for your residence permit card.

Residence permit card

If you are granted a permit for a period of more than three months, you will receive a residence permit card. You need to be fingerprinted and photographed for this card.

If you need an entry visa, you need to have a residence permit card to enter Sweden. Ask the embassy if they can send it to you by post or if you will need to pick it up in person.

If you do not need an entry visa, you will get fingerprinted and photographed for your residence permit card when you have arrived in Sweden.

If your family also applies for a residence permit together with you, the Swedish Migration Agency must also check the passport of each family member. The requirement to present a passport in person does not apply to children under the age of 5. In that case, it is enough that the parent presents the child’s passport through the digital passport check, or during their own appointment at the embassy. However, if the child needs an entry visa to enter Sweden, they must accompany their parent or legal guardian to the embassy to be photographed.
