You have a permit in Sweden – Live with someone You are going to have a baby

You have a residence permit to live with someone in Sweden and you or your partner are pregnant or have had a baby. Here you will find information about what applies to you and what you need to do.

A child born in Sweden receives the same citizenship(s) as their parents. Depending on the parents’ citizenship(s) and permits, in some cases you need to apply for a residence permit for your child.

It depends on the citizenship or permit(s) of their parents. Select the option that best describes your family’s situation.

A child always receives Swedish citizenship, and does not have to apply for a residence permit, if

  • one of their parents is a Swedish citizen at the time of the child’s birth, regardless of whether the child is born in Sweden or abroad
  • a deceased parent of the child was a Swedish citizen at the time of their death.

If the child’s parents are citizens of a non-EU/EEA country, you have to apply for a residence permit for your child.

If one of you has a residence permit in Sweden and the other has applied for asylum, you can apply for a residence permit for your child. If the child is in need of protection, you can apply for asylum for your child.

If one of the child’s parents is an EU/EEA citizen and has a right of residence in Sweden, and your child is also an EU/EEA citizen, then they automatically have a right of residence. In that case, you do not need to contact the Swedish Migration Agency. For information about your child’s population registration, contact the Swedish Tax Agency.

If the parents are EU/EEA citizens and have a residence permit in Sweden, you must apply for a residence permit for your child.

If at least one parent is a British citizen and has residence status in Sweden, your child can also receive this status.

If one of the parents is a Swedish citizen and their child is born outside Sweden, you need to contact the Swedish Tax Agency to register the child in Sweden and submit a name notification.

If a child is born outside Sweden and their parents are not Swedish citizens, you need to apply for a residence permit for the child. If the child has citizenship in a country where you do not need an entry visa to travel to Sweden, you can travel to Sweden before the child has been granted a residence permit.

Contact the Swedish Social Insurance Agency to find out if you are entitled to child allowance

If you have a temporary residence permit, you can travel out of Sweden and back for as long as your permit is valid. This means that you will not lose your residence permit if take parental leave in another country while your permit is valid. If you leave Sweden, you must have a valid passport and your residence permit card in order to return.

If you have a permanent residence permit and are away from Sweden for more than a year, the Swedish Migration Agency can revoke your residence permit.

More Afghans may be able to receive passports from their home country

The Swedish Migration Agency estimates that Afghan authorities are now able to issue national passports to their citizens within a reasonable time. This means that Afghan citizens with a residence permit in Sweden no longer automatically have the right to an alien’s passport. Instead, the Swedish Migration Agency will review each application for an alien’s passport individually.

The Swedish Government has taken a decision to increase the repatriation grant on 1 January 2026. The amount you can receive depends on whether you are applying as a single adult, as a couple, or as a family with children.

Extended passports become invalid on 1 October

As of 1 October 2025, Swedish authorities will no longer accept passports that have had their period of validity extended by inserting a stamp or sticker into the passport. If you have such a national passport, you should apply for a new one.
