You want to apply Alien’s passportsYou want to apply Alien’s passports
You have a residence permit in Sweden and want to apply for an alien’s passport, because you cannot obtain a passport from the national authorities in your country of origin.
- Important to know
- How it works
- Apply
If you have a residence permit in Sweden, you can apply for an alien’s passport.
Some examples of when you can get an alien’s passport:
- You have a residence permit in Sweden because you have grounds for protection from the national authorities in your country of origin, and this makes it impossible for you to travel there to get a passport.
- You are a citizen of a country whose passport is not approved in Sweden.
- You are unable to obtain a passport from the authorities in your country of origin.
If you have been granted a refugee status declaration or are a stateless person, you can apply for a travel document instead of an alien’s passport.

If you are in Sweden but need to travel to another country to arrange for a new national passport, you can apply for an emergency alien’s passport.

An adult must submit the child’s application
It is a child’s parent/legal guardian or guardian who applies for an alien’s passport for the child.
In what cases will I be unable to get an alien’s passport?
You cannot be granted an alien’s passport if
- you are a Swedish citizen or EU/EEA citizen
- you have a valid national passport or can arrange to get a new national passport
- you are currently in your country of origin.
If you have been granted a residence permit based on grounds for protection that are not related to the national authorities in your country of origin (for example, due to honour issues, natural disasters, or the general situation in your country of origin) the main rule is that you do not have the right to an alien’s passport. In that case, you should instead contact the national authorities of your country of origin to get a passport. However, there are exceptions for certain countries. Contact the Swedish Migration Agency for more information.

How long is the alien’s passport valid?
An alien's passport is valid for a maximum of three years and cannot be extended. If you need an alien’s passport after the old one has expired, you can apply for a new one.
How long must I wait for a decision?
It is not possible to say exactly how long you will need to wait for a decision. There are many things that affect the waiting time, for example whether your application is complete to begin with or whether we need to request more information, or whether we need to check with other authorities when investigating your case.
Here we show statistics on how long it has taken for people who have applied for the same permit as you. The statistics are based on cases decided in the last 12 months.
What does it cost to apply?
Adults: SEK 750
Children: SEK 750
You will not receive a refund if your application is rejected.
If you have a child who needs an alien’s passport
Children under the age of 18 cannot apply for an alien’s passport themselves. It is a child’s parent/legal guardian or guardian who applies for an alien’s passport for the child.
If you have become a Swedish citizen
If you have become a Swedish citizen, you should contact the police to apply for a Swedish passport.
Where can I travel with my alien’s passport?
An alien’s passport meets the EU’s passport requirements and can be used for travel to most countries. Some countries may require you to have an entry visa. Before you travel, contact the embassy of the country in question for more information.
If you have been granted a residence permit based on grounds for protection, your alien’s passport will state that you cannot travel to your country of origin or the country from which you fled.
If you have been unable to prove your identity, your alien’s passport will state that your identity has not been proven. This may make it more difficult to travel to certain countries.
If you lose your alien’s passport
If you lose your alien’s passport or if it is stolen, you should report this to the police. If you need a new alien’s passport, you must submit a new application. Attach a copy of the police report when you apply for a new alien’s passport.
If you have lost your alien’s passport or if it is suspected that the passport has been misused, the Swedish Migration Agency may decide that your new alien’s passport is only valid for travel within Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Norway. If you have lost more than one alien’s passport, we may issue you a new passport that is only valid in Sweden.
