Important to know
Requirements to get a travel document
To be granted a travel document, you must have a residence permit in Sweden and meet one of these criteria:
- You are a recognised refugee under the 1951 Geneva Convention.
- You are stateless and meet the requirements of the 1954 New York Convention.
An adult must submit the child’s application
It is a child's parent/legal guardian or guardian who applies for a travel document for the child.
Prepare this before you apply
Copy of your Swedish ID card
Copy of any previously issued travel document
If you have a previously issued travel document, you must return it to the Swedish Migration Agency. If you need to use the travel document while you are waiting for your new one, you can first send us a copy. You must then send us the original travel document when we notify you.
Send the copy of your travel document to:
Migrationsverket
Box 3100
903 03 Umeå
Copy of a police report stating that you have lost your travel document (if this is the case)
Consent for the Swedish Migration Agency to issue a passport to a child under the age of 18
If the application concerns a child under the age of 18, their parent/legal guardian must approve the child’s application by attaching a consent form. If your child has two parents/legal guardians, both must approve the child’s application and their signatures must be witnessed.
Copy/copies the ID card or passport of the child’s parent(s)/legal guardian(s)
If the application concerns a child under the age of 18.
Copy of a document proving your appointment as a child’s guardian, as well as a copy of your ID card, if you are applying on behalf of a child in this capacity
If you are applying as the guardian of a child under the age of 18.
In what cases will I be unable to get a travel document?
You cannot be granted a travel document if you are a Swedish citizen or an EU/EEA citizen.
If you are not a refugee or stateless person, in some cases you may be able to get an alien’s passport.
How long is the travel document valid?
A travel document is valid for a maximum of two years and cannot be extended. If you need a travel document after the old one has expired, you can apply for a new one.
How long must I wait for a decision?
It is not possible to say exactly how long you will need to wait for a decision. There are many things that affect the waiting time, for example whether your application is complete to begin with or whether we need to request more information, or whether we need to check with other authorities when investigating your case.
Here we show statistics on how long it has taken for people who have applied for the same permit as you. The statistics are based on cases decided in the last 12 months.
What does it cost to apply?
It costs nothing to apply, but the travel document costs SEK 350. If we grant your application for a travel document, we will contact you via email or letter with information on how to pay.
If you have a child who needs a travel document
Children under the age of 18 years cannot apply for a travel document themselves. It is a child's parent/legal guardian or guardian who applies for a travel document for the child.
If you have become a Swedish citizen
If you have become a Swedish citizen, you should contact the police to apply for a Swedish passport.
Where can I travel with my travel document?
Your travel document meets the EU’s passport requirements and can be used for travel to most countries. However, if you are a refugee under the 1951 Geneva Convention, your travel document will state that you cannot travel to your country of origin or the country from which you have fled.
If you have been unable to prove your identity, your travel document will state that your identity has not been proven. This may make it more difficult to travel to certain countries.
Some countries may require you to have an entry visa. Before you travel, contact the embassy of the country in question for more information.
If you lose your travel document
If you lose your travel document or if it is stolen, you must report this to the police. If you need a new travel document, you must submit a new application. Bring a copy of the police report when you apply for a new travel document.
