Check your allowed short-term stay
The EU has published an online tool that makes it possible for those who are covered by the EU’s Entry/Exit System to check for how long they are allowed to stay within the Schengen area.

You want to apply – Visiting Sweden for up to 90 days (entry visa)
If you already have an ongoing application for a residence permit, for example to work or live with someone in Sweden, the Swedish Migration Agency advises against also applying for a visitor’s residence permit. If you do so, your ongoing application might be rejected.
These requirements must be met in order for you to be granted a residence permit:

The passport must be valid for at least three months after the end date of your visit.
Your stay in Sweden must only be for the purpose of visiting the country
You must intend to leave Sweden after your stay
You must be able to support yourself during the time you will be in Sweden
Read more about what applies to each category under the headings below.
You must have medical travel insurance for your entire planned stay
You must have an individual medical travel insurance that is valid in Sweden. The Swedish Migration Agency recommends that the insurance cover costs of at least EUR 30,000, be valid in all Schengen countries, and cover emergency medical assistance, urgent hospital treatment, or transport to your country of origin for medical reasons.
If any of these situations apply to you, you do not need to have medical travel insurance:
Select which embassy to visit
If you apply from outside Sweden, you must also book an appointment to visit an embassy or consulate-general when you make your application. Not all Swedish embassies and consulates-general handle migration cases, so it is important to check which one you should contact:

| The application concerns | Months |

| Visiting Sweden for more than 90 days | 4 |
If you are in Sweden and have a residence permit here, and want to remain in Sweden for up to 90 days after your residence permit expires, you do not need to apply for a visitor’s residence permit if you are visa-free or have a valid Schengen visa. Otherwise, you must leave Sweden when your residence permit expires or apply for a visitor’s residence permit before your current residence permit expires.
If the purpose of your visit is to do voluntary work, for example as part of a programme or exchange between countries or organisations (at training centres, community farms, religious non-profit organisations, parishes and similar), you do not normally need a work permit. However, you must apply for a visitor’s residence permit if you are going to volunteer in Sweden for more than 90 days.
You can read more about who does not need a work permit in Sweden on the page Exemptions from the work permit requirement.

It is important that you apply for an extension before your current residence permit expires. As long as you submit your application before your permit expires, you have the right to stay in Sweden until we make a decision, even if your current permit expires. You apply by filling in the application and attaching the required documents.
Before you can receive a decision, you must present your passport. To do this, you must book an appointment for an in-person visit. The Swedish Migration Agency will send you a letter with information about how to book an appointment for your visit.

You need to bring your passport to your in-person visit. If family members are applying with you, they must also accompany you.
You will also be fingerprinted and photographed during your appointment. This information will be used to produce a residence permit card for you.

After your in-person visit, the Swedish Migration Agency will review all the information related to your application and determine whether you can be granted a residence permit.
We will contact you if we need more information.
By logging in to My page, you can access information about your application and use our services.

Once the Swedish Migration Agency has made a decision, it will be sent to your address in Sweden, or to your representative.
When you receive the decision, you can find out the reasons on which we based it. If you are granted a residence permit, you have the right to stay in Sweden as long as the permit is valid. If your application is rejected and you are currently in Sweden, you must prepare to leave the country.
Before you start your application, you must have assembled the documents you will need to attach.
