Extended passports become invalid on 1 October

As of 1 October 2025, Swedish authorities will no longer accept passports that have had their period of validity extended by inserting a stamp or sticker into the passport. If you have such a national passport, you should apply for a new one.

Updated on 15 September 2025

During the pandemic, some countries had a shortage of materials to issue new passports. In such cases, people applying for new passports could instead have the validity of their passport extended by the embassy, which would record the new period of validity by inserting a stamp or sticker in the passport. This was a temporary solution, and the Swedish authorities have now decided to no longer accept such passports.

As of 1 October 2025, the Swedish Migration Agency will not grant residence cards, residence status or residence permits for studies, visits, family ties or work to people with an extended passport, and you will not be able to enter Sweden with an extended passport.

Apply for a new passport in time

If you have an extended passport with a stamp or sticker and plan to apply, or have applied, for a residence card, residence status, entry visa or residence permit for studies, visits, family ties or work, you should apply for a new passport in your country of origin or at the embassy of your country of origin.

The Swedish Migration Agency will accept extended passports with a stamp or sticker until 30 September 2025. After that, you cannot enter Sweden with this type of extended passport. You should therefore apply for a new passport as soon as possible. Please note that even if you receive a decision in your case from the Swedish Migration Agency before 1 October, after 30 September you will still need a new passport to enter Sweden.

We will contact you if you need to supplement your application

Get a new passport as soon as possible, but wait to supplement your application until the Swedish Migration Agency contacts you and asks you to submit a copy of your new passport. You will receive information from us about how to proceed.

If we process your application for a residence permit, residence card or residence status after 1 October and you have not already notified us that you have a new passport, we will ask you to obtain a new passport. If we need to ask you to supplement your application, you may have to wait longer than usual for a decision.

Passport requirements for residence permits

To obtain or extend a residence permit in Sweden, you usually need a valid passport from your home country. Exceptions apply if you are a refugee, a person in need of subsidiary protection or if you have a permanent residence permit.

If you are a refugee, you are entitled to a travel document.

You may be entitled to an alien's passport if you are a person in need of subsidiary protection or cannot obtain a valid passport from your home country for other reasons. This applies, for example, if you cannot contact the authorities in your home country, or if your country's passport is not recognised in Sweden. When you apply for an alien's passport, you must be able to show why you cannot obtain a passport from your home country and what attempts you have made.
