New rules for applying for another residence permit from within Sweden

From 11 June 2026, new rules will apply to individuals who hold a residence permit under the Temporary Protection Directive. These rules mean that, in certain cases, you may apply for a different type of residence permit without leaving Sweden.

From 11 June, if you have a residence permit under the Temporary Protection Directive, you may apply for another residence permit without having to leave Sweden. Provided that you meet the relevant requirements, you may apply for a residence permit for employment, self-employment, research, studies in higher education, or an EU Blue Card. You may submit your application while remaining in Sweden.

You want to apply – Work – Employees
You want to apply – Work – Self-employed people
You want to apply – Work – Researchers
You want to apply – Work – EU Blue Cards
You want to apply – Study – Higher education
You want to apply – Study – Doctoral studies

You may only hold one residence permit at a time

You cannot hold two residence permits simultaneously. If you are granted a new residence permit, your current residence permit will therefore be revoked.
It is important that you find out which conditions apply to the permit you intend to apply for before submitting your application. A residence permit under the Temporary Protection Directive and another type of residence permit do not grant the same rights. It is important that you are aware of the consequences that changing the basis of your residence permit may entail.

Your family members may also apply

If you are granted a residence permit (for work, for self-employment for research, for higher education studies, or an EU Blue Card), your family members may apply for residence permits as family members if they do not wish to apply for any of the permits themselves. In that case, they apply for a residence permit as relatives of someone who has applied for or been granted a residence permit for work, self-employment, research, higher education studies, or an EU Blue Card.

You want to apply – Work – Family of an employee or self-employed person who apply afterwards
You want to apply – Study – Family who want to apply afterwards – study

Apply for a new permit before your current one expires

If your residence permit under the Temporary Protection Directive expires while the Swedish Migration Agency is processing your application, you may still be granted the new permit, provided that you submitted your application before your current permit expired.
