Employers Who can you employ?

Some people have the right to work in Sweden without a permit, some may only work if specific conditions are met, and some do not have the right to work at all. Use this guide to see what applies in different situations.

Requirements for you as an employer

As an employer, you must personally check documents showing that the person you want to employ has the right to work in Sweden. You must also save copies of these documents for the entire employment period and for at least twelve months after the employment has ended.

Using this guide or asking the Swedish Migration Agency about the person's right to work is not enough to meet these requirements.

Select the options that apply to the person you want to employ to get information about whether they have the right to work in Sweden or not. The answers shown are general information based on the options you have selected. If you need information about a specific situation not listed as an option, you can contact the Swedish Migration Agency to ask your question.

On the page Employing someone who already has the right to work in Sweden, you can read more about people with permits to live in Sweden who also have the right to work.

If you suspect that someone is working or planning to work illegally, you can submit tips to the Swedish Migration Agency.

What citizenship does the person you want to employ have?

Living in a country does not mean being a citizen of that country.
