On 12 June 2026, the EU Pact on migration and asylum enters into force across the European Union. Together with 26 other countries, Sweden will apply a common legal framework for the management and reception of persons seeking international protection (asylum). The EU Pact on migration and asylum introduces far-reaching changes to how migration to and within the EU is managed.

New rules for labour immigration from 1 June
New rules for work permits are now coming into effect in Sweden. The rules affect people who are applying for or extending a work permit for employment in Sweden. They also affect employers who want to employ people from countries outside the EU/EEA.

New rules for labour immigration – these occupations are exempted
The Government has now decided which occupations and groups will be exempt from the salary requirement. The decision also covers which occupations will be excluded from eligibility for work permits. The new rules will come into force on 1 and 11 June.
