You want to extend Protection under the Temporary Protection Directive

You have a residence permit in Sweden under the Temporary Protection Directive and want to stay in Sweden.

  • Important to know
  • How it works
  • Apply

You can apply to extend your residence permit under the Temporary Protection Directive if you want to stay in Sweden. If your residence permit expires on 4 March 2026, you must apply during the application period 28 January–4 March 2026. This also applies to those who have been registered in the Swedish Population Register.

Notify the Swedish Tax Agency if you change your address so that we can reach you. If you are not registered in the Swedish Population Register, you must instead notify the Swedish Migration Agency of your new address.

E-service for extension of residence permit under the Temporary Protection Directive

The application opens 28 January 2026.

These requirements must be met in order for you to be granted an extended residence permit with temporary protection under the Temporary Protection Directive:

You must have a residence permit in Sweden under the Temporary Protection Directive

You must continue to meet the requirements for a residence permit with temporary protection under the Temporary Protection Directive

You must be present in Sweden

Retrieve the case number for all applicants

You need to have the case number for every person you are applying for. The number is located on the residence permit card or in the upper right-hand corner of the decision letter from the Swedish Migration Agency.

The case number is circled in the image.

You do not need to attach any documents to your application. You are not required to have valid identity documents to receive an extended residence permit, but if you do have identity documents, you should bring them when you later visit the Swedish Migration Agency to be photographed and provide fingerprints.

If your residence permit expires during 2026, you must apply during the application period 28 January–4 March 2026. If you submit your application in the e-service by 4 March, you have applied on time, even if you receive a later appointment for being photographed and providing fingerprints.

If you apply for extended protection on time and are still registered with one of the Swedish Migration Agency's reception units (that is you are not yet registered in the Swedish Population Register), you retain your right to accommodation and financial aid while waiting for a new decision.

If you apply too late

If you apply too late, that is after your residence permit has expired, you must apply for protection again. You will not be allowed to work again until you have received a new residence permit. If you have financial aid from the Swedish Migration Agency, you will lose the support aid and must apply for it again.

If you are granted an extended residence permit under the EU's Temporary Protection Directive, your permit will be valid until 4 March 2027. Before that date, you will receive information about what to do when your residence permit expires.

If the security situation in Ukraine improves enough that the EU decides to terminate the Temporary Protection Directive before 4 March 2027, the Swedish Migration Agency will revoke your permit. If this happens, you will be informed before the permit ceases to be valid.

You can apply for yourself, two co-applying adult family members, and up to ten children under the age of 18 for whom you are the parent/legal guardian. Children can only be co-applicants with their own parents/legal guardians.

Please note that you cannot simultaneously apply for family members who need to apply for a residence permit for the first time. Everyone you apply for must already have a residence permit that expires on the same date as yours.

Children without a parent/legal guardian can use the e-service themselves and should apply only for themselves, not together with others. The child's guardian does not need to confirm the application.

It costs nothing to apply for an extended residence permit under the Temporary Protection Directive.

It takes a few weeks for the Swedish Migration Agency to check whether you are entitled to protection under the Temporary Protection Directive. We will contact you if we need more information.

If you have been registered in the Swedish Population Register, you should contact your local authority if you need help with accommodation and financial aid.

If you are not registered in the Swedish Population Register and cannot arrange your accommodation on your own, you are entitled to accommodation provided by the Swedish Migration Agency once you have applied for a residence permit under the Temporary Protection Directive.

If you are not registered in the Swedish Population Register and do not have your own money, you may also be entitled to financial aid from the Swedish Migration Agency.

You can contact the Swedish Migration Agency at any time and let us know if you need assistance, even if you have previously arranged your own accommodation or financial aid.
