Extending a residence permit

If you have a temporary residence permit, and want to stay in Sweden after it expires, you must apply to have your permit extended.

How you should extend your residence permit depends on what type of residence permit you have. You should always apply for a new residence permit before your temporary residence permit runs out.

If you have applied for asylum and received a tempo­rary resi­dence permit

When your temporary residence permit expires, you can apply for an extension. You can receive an extended residence permit if you are still in need of protection. In certain cases, you can also receive a residence permit if you have other reasons for remaining in Sweden.

If you have a resi­dence permit for work

If you want to continue working after your permit has expired, you must apply to have your work permit extended. If you have had a permit as an employee for six months or more, and apply before your current permit expires, you have the right to continue working while waiting for a decision.
